It was a Monday, September 19th, the girls were off to school on their bikes. They have rode their bikes to school a ton of times last year and this year. A few other things had happened to Alley in the past while riding to school...lost 2 fingernails because her back tire got bumped by someone else and instead of swerving to the street she swerved and hit the brick wall instead, flat tire, etc....that should have been my warning signs, huh?! {I'm sticking to driving the girls to school from now on...no big deal!} That brick wall would soon be the enemy again real soon!
Both boys were sick, so I had planned to finally take them to the QuickCare after I got the girls off to school. I finished getting them ready, we were about 10 minutes behind the girls. For some reason I decided to follow the way they normally rode their bikes. I followed, followed....still didn't see them, passed the crosswalk...I got a pit in my stomache about that time...hmm.. they must have passed already.....got up the street almost to the school and I saw Shannon Harris loading Ashlyn & her bike in her car. Alley was already in there. She was parked in the middle of the street almost, looked like she had quickly turned around to the sidewalk. I rolled down my window and confusingly asked, what was going on. She was in a panic and flustered and just said....."meet me at the school." I knew something was wrong, I wasn't sure what. I"m so glad she was there to pick them up though, what if I hadn't even gone that way that day, what if nobody picked them up...yikes! So sad.
We got to the school and I got out and she said, I'm pretty sure Alley broke her arm, I couldn't believe it. I wasn't sure. I still hadn't seen the arm, but she had. (knowing now...she told me she almost passed out when she first found Alley, it was bad) I was in disbelief or shock or something, I was like okay....go to school Ashlyn...(haha...poor girl off to school not knowing what was going on with her sister). I was going to get Alley and put her in my Car and Shannon about freaked out and said, "No, you are not moving her..." Okay?! She followed me to the Hospital. It was when we got to the Hospital that I then saw Alley's dangling arm and the elbow pushing out the back.....ugh! Not good! My poor boys probably weren't going to the Doctor today :) Shannon took them and off me and Alley went in a wheel chair to the ER. She was in Pain and had to go through moving it and Xrays. She went 3 HOURS of Xrays and waiting without any pain medication. I was about to SCREAM!!
After seeing the XRAYS I knew it was soooo bad. It was fractured above the left elbow and also dislocated at the Elbow, the Elbow was completely flipped backwards....yikes!! I'm wishing now that I had a copy of the Xray to remember it. They finally Sedated her and had to set the bone. I couldn't watch while the setted it.....horrible.
She was still so out of it....she couldn't remember breaking her arm, she didn't know who we were for like 20 minutes. Her eyes were all glassed over....scary feeling. It was like she had brain damage or something. Luckily, she finally came out. They put it in a splint because the next day she would be scheduled for surgery with Dr. Todd Parry. That night was horrible. She was in a lot of pain. Any little bump, any little movement...ouch!
Getting ready for surgery early the next morning.
They put a pin in at her elbow and she was in a lot of pain for about a week. {the day after her surgery, my sick boys finally got to the doctor :)}
September 27th she finally went back to school. She had a pink cast and had everybody sign it.

3 weeks later the pin came out and a new cast went on....
Out with the Old, in with the New
She couldn't wait, ever since she had the Pink cast, she kept saying she wanted a Blue Cast.
Waiting in the Doctors office....very nervous about getting the pin taken out.
Ammon though it was pretty cool :)
Looks good...yay!
She had to look away when they were sawing off the cast, plus she was afraid she would see the pin sticking out of her arm...
The Pin, yuck
She was crying when Dr. Parry was about to pull the pin out. He grabbed it and said 1, 2, 3....but pulled it out on 2..haha, she didn't even notice. After he said "It's Out" she couldn't believe it.
3 weeks later and the Blue Cast came off. So, she was casted for a total of 6 weeks. It healed very well, and it seemed much better after the pin was taken out. I can't believe I didn't take any after pics. She couldn't bend it for the longest time, finally now she is able to straighten it out all the way. I was afraid she would have a bent arm her whole life :)
She broke it right on the growth plate so, we are suppose to check it after 6 months to make sure it's growing as it should. I hope so.
What an adventure!!
*The story of how it happened from Alley*
They were riding their bikes, Ashlyn was behind her and she said she couldn't hear Ashlyn. She wasn't talking at all and she couldn't hear her bike behind her. She said that they mostly talk a lot on the way to school and she was getting worried. So, she turned her head around to make sure Ashlyn was there and of course she must have turned her bike handles along with her head and lost control and she rammed into the brick wall. Ouch!! There you have it! That's the story!
